Types of Jobs for Ex-Felons

Depending on your felony and the exact circumstances, there may be some jobs that you will not be able to apply for in Indiana. From working at a bank to working for the government, there are some qualifications that need to be met and unfortunately, sometimes having a felony can wipe out any chance of getting certain types of jobs.

Luckily, there are many different types of jobs that felons can get – usually without a lot of headaches. Here is a list of some ideas that you should consider if you have a felony conviction in Indiana but you still want to work.

  • Retail Jobs - These are hit and miss and the pay may be low, but if you can get your foot in the door there is a good chance that you can impress the owners and move up to assistant manager or even manager after a while. Don’t be afraid to take a job in retail if it’s just working the counter or helping customers. Once you have your foot in the door, you can really impress and move up. It’s easier to do this than find a great manager’s job without having first worked for a company.
  • Trucking Jobs – These types of jobs are not for everyone, but if you love being on your own for long stretches and don’t mind driving a big rig, a truck driving job might be great. A lot of the time, trucking companies have programs set-up especially for ex-felons to help them get great paying jobs that may lead to a long term career. You want to check with any local trucking schools or companies and see if they have any relevant programs for ex-felons. You will never know unless you ask and you may find a great opportunity.
  • Seasonal Work / Temp Jobs – In order to build up a good work history, it is important to take any and all work that you can get if you have a felony in your past. Whether it is seasonal work or a temporary office or factory job, if you can work you can build up a good work history and record which can go a long way in making sure you can land a great paying job that you enjoy. This is not the most optimal for ex-felons, but sometimes even having a little money coming in can be a good thing.

There are many other great opportunities out there. There’s no denying that getting a job with a felony conviction is tough, but you must remember to never give up and never surrender. If you keep at it day after day and go about it smartly, you can land the job of your dreams.

And even if it isn’t the job of your dreams, it can be a stepping stone that helps you reach the job of your dreams – whatever that might be. The biggest thing to remember is that you should never give up.

The harder you work toward getting a job, the more successful you are going to be. It is also important to check with local organizations that are known to help felons find work – like Goodwill Industries for example.

They have a great history of working with ex-felons all over the country. From job training to job placement, they may be the help you need to make your dream of getting a job and becoming a stable member of society a reality.
